Love this spritet based rpgs the best. There's beautiful graphics, great voice-work, interesting and quirky characters, fun combat (everything you'd expect out of a classic rpg). This may be an RPG for hardcore gamers though. Even if you level up a lot, monsters are still a challenge. Some people say it's a flaw, but I think it was made this way to be hardcore. The only thing I don't like about this game is that you can learn the characters skills to fast. Other than that, it's a great RPG.

i really like CGS... a lot... but there are a few niggling issues that have gotten under my skin:

#1. no numeric HP on enemies. just a yellow gauge. it hamstrings your strategy by not allowing you to choose an appropriate attack. you'll either waste MP on performing a special attack when a regular attack would have done the job -- or the opposite -- thus lengthening a battle by several rounds.

#2. the same 'blue monster' in the field. i know that's how it has to be since it's not 'random' encounters, but a tiny variety would be helpful so you'd know whether it's a battle worth fighting, or just weaklings not worth your time since you'll only get 1 or 2 experience points.

#3. staying with the 'blue monster' issue... during battle, there's a 'turn gauge' by way of little 'head avatars' representing all involved in the battle and their turn order. unfortunately, there's no way of knowing which specific enemy will be attacking next, because the 'turn gauge' avatars for ALL enemies are the same 'blue monster' heads, NOT the actual enemy heads. so, for example, it's Killian's turn and the 'turn gauge' shows an enemy will be next. you won't be able to attack for certainty that specific 'looming' enemy in an attempt to kill it before its turn, so you're left guessing which enemy will be attacking next. (you'll be wrong most of the time.)

#4. time wasting issues, like excessive 'X' button pushing... when you turn on the game, when you save the game, when you navigate the menus, during battles, etc. etc.

BUT, i still LOVE the game!
(and it's very purtty =)

This game started out promising, but I ended up giving up on it about half way through. This game has a lot of problems.

1. Armor-The armor system in this game is useless and a joke. With even the top pieces of armor low level monsters will still inflict a large amount of damage on you.

2. Boring repetitive dungeons and no maps- You will travel through dungeons with the same skins and monsters over and over in every room. There are also no maps so if you get lost in a dungeon you will wind up wasting all your healing potions repetitively fighting monsters trying to find your way out. There were several times when I got lost in a dungeon and had to look up maps online to find my bearings.

3. Spell casters are essentially useless- Spell casters have very low HP and defense points and can be easily killed by low level monsters regardless of how high a level they are.

4. Side quests are a waste of time- During the game you'll have characters ask you to complete side quests, but the items you receive for completing the quest aren't worth the time and effort it takes to complete them.

5. Skill system is a total joke. You have to waste hundreds of skill points unlocking skills before learning them an only to find out it's not a skill you're interested in.

6. Spotty Difficulty of monsters from area to area- In one area you'll breeze through the monsters and in the next area the monsters will destroy you. You'll have to spend several hours leveling up your characters and grinding for items before moving on.

Overall, I would not recommend this game. If you want to play a great RPG game then pick up Joan D' Arc of Brave Story.

CGS is a wonderful romp for fans of oldschool turn-based RPGs. It feels inspired by older PSX titles like Legend of Dragoon and Chrono Cross, with the humor of Shadow Hearts 1 & 2.

The game's not perfect, and can be mildly frustrating when you're in a dungeon and get lost, but overall, it's a fun ride.

If you loved RPGs in the 90s, Crimson Gem Saga is highly recommended.

This game starts out as a decent RPG. It has all the elements of mystery and adventure all knotted up in the beginning. Then for some reason you beging to notic things not working. Is there even an armor system in this game? a low lvl monster will still do the same dmg to you when your at the end of the game. armor never seemed to make a difference, it seemed as though some developers got lazy. The story had LOTS of potention, then towards the end of the game it looks like the developers were like, "OK! lets wrap this up, we got 5 minutes to release it!" the story takes a huge dive off the cliff in an attempt to instantly end the game. This game left me feeling angry.
